Alwoodley Golf Club and Augusta National

The connection between Alwoodley Golf Club, in the North of England, and Augusta National of US Masters fame, is golf course designer Alister MacKenzie.

MacKenzie, one of the most famous golf course designers, can boast several courses featuring in the World’s Top 100 survey by Today’s Golfer. The Top 100 includes Alwoodley, which was MacKenzie’s first design, as well as Augusta at number 1 in the survey, and Cypress Point at number 2.

Although now measuring 6,900 yards, Alwoodley remains true to the original MacKenzie layout. In the words of Ben Crenshaw, 2 times Masters champion: “Alwoodley is to be commended for steadfastly maintaining the integrity of his design…I firmly believe that Alwoodley represents the talents of Dr. MacKenzie’s fertile mind”.
